Benedetta Petracca (ESR1) has participated to the "Nanotools for Biomembranes" Summer School", which took place at Malmö University, Sweden, from 26th to 30th of August 2019. Her participation could be made thanks to a travel grant provided by Biolin Scientific AB.

The course provided both theoretical and experimental knowledge on a set of surface sensitive techniques such as Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Infrared Spectroscopy (IR), Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation monitoring (QCM-D), Neutron Reflection (NR) and Ellipsometry. These techniques were applied to model and investigate biomolecular interactions between different antimicrobial peptides and cellular membranes.

During the summer school, students also got the chance to visit The European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, an accelerator driven neutron source that will provide a unique multi-disciplinary research facility. ESS is one of the largest science infrastructure projects being built so far.
